"Hoodoo’s not my scene, so naturally meditation wasn’t on my horizon. To be honest, I was drawn to learn meditation from Mark more because we’re friends and I admire the creative work he does with his digital agency - Where There’s Smoke. So I went to Mark seeking nothing in particular, just a general curiosity about what this bald, bearded dude seems so connected to. 

Mark opened my eyes to some things, and taught me a very simple technique that would fundamentally change the way I function.  

Mark reflected on the limitlessness of contemporary life, with its competing demands and infinite access to everything. He cited research indicating the dramatic rise in everyday stress and anxiety levels, numbers that seem to correlate with an increasingly technological world. He spoke about human potential, this idea that there is a vast and fertile brain in our heads that is capable of almost whatever we ask of it, and lamented how the stress and anxiety we experience - in every way a modern specie - is preventing us from reaching that potential. He even drilled down into the science of stress, adrenaline, and anxiety, and how the brain’s function is impaired when those states are triggered. Mercifully, he stopped at about the point where interesting facts turn geeky.

Then he taught me one simple technique that let me experience something completely new. All of a sudden, and for the first time in my life, I was capable of letting my mind take a breather.  

With what mark has taught me, now I can give my mind a breather every day. I feel more resilient to stress, less prone to anxiety, and my mind turns at a less overwhelming cadence. I function differently. But it’s not just about what the technique helps you deal with, but what it lets you do, which is truly exceptional. Because here’s the thing, Mark doesn’t simply teach meditation, he creates space for people. 

By following this simple technique in a daily routine you can create space, and then fill it with whatever you want. For me it was composure, clarity, and discipline. But it could also be creativity, satisfaction, gratitude, productivity… images of cute animals, pretty much whatever. But the key is that once you learn to make space, you get to choose. And that, let me tell you, is truly empowering."

My job consists of 5.30am starts and late finishes so I doubted my motivation to fit in meditation every day… the truth is though, and it was one of the main things I learnt from Mark was that If you can’t fit 40mins into your day, then there is your first problem. I wake 20minutes earlier now and capitalise on the benefits for the rest of the day.

I can’t thank Mark enough for helping me get the most out of my daily life, I urge everyone to consider taking his class. There is so much talk on a daily basis about be being fit and healthy, it only makes sense to have a healthy mind as well.
